University Archivist – Point Loma Nazarene University – San Diego, CA

Job Summary

PLNU is looking for an experienced archivist to collect, organize, and preserve the university’s archival documents, artifacts, and other materials. The archivist is a member of the Ryan Library staff and will collaborate with the library director, university administrators, and other stakeholders to ensure the long-term viability of the collection and to improve discoverability of its contents. This individual will develop and maintain operating procedures for archives and special collections and will collaborate with library colleagues to review and update collection development and other relevant policies. The university archivist will often work independently and will be skilled in prioritizing, planning, and completing projects.

This is an in-person position that allocates time throughout the work week to both the Point Loma campus, where the university library is located, and PLNU’s Mission Valley location, where the archives are located.

Job Responsibilities

  • Processing, organizing, describing, and preserving historical university records, special collections, and other materials
  • Planning and implementing digitization projects, including collaboration with appropriate colleagues to recommend preservation and discovery mechanisms for digital collections
  • Responding to archives-related research queries
  • Facilitating supervised access to special collections and archival materials by faculty, students, and external researchers
  • Cultivating and maintaining relationships with internal constituents to facilitate donation of university-related materials
  • Collaborating with Donor Relations (University Advancement) to cultivate relationships with alumni, emeriti, and external constituents who may have materials appropriate for the university archives
  • Making recommendations on archives-related policies, procedures, and acquisitions and participating in overall library planning activities
  • Promoting archival and special collections to both PLNU and community audiences

Educational/Experiential Requirements

What We’re Looking For:

  • Experience creating or implementing a strategic management plan for archival materials
  • Experience employing best practices to work with fragile, dusty, and aging materials
  • Experience collaborating with institutional stakeholders to prioritize projects
  • Track record of effective communication with departmental colleagues and university administrators
  • Attention to detail and ability to manage time effectively while working independently
  • Familiarity with metadata standards and digital records management
  • Proficiency with ArchivesSpace or other archives management software
  • Experience working with diverse stakeholders and researchers

Qualifications:

  • Experience and academic qualification sufficient to independently manage the university archives required
  • Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree, certification, or specialized training in library and information science, archives and records management, history, or church history preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required
  • Evidence of Christian commitment and active church involvement required. In addition, staff agree to live in agreement with PLNU’s Community Life Covenant.
