National Library Week

Happy National Library Week 2018!

Thursday

Dear friends,

“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer” (Rom. 12:12). As the week continues, allow me a moment to thank you for your eagerness in responding to this annual call to prayer. I know that you minister daily to those in your churches, families, and workplaces, but I’m especially grateful for your ministry to our ACL community this week as you have prayed for one another.

Please pray today on behalf of those who volunteer in leadership roles within ACL. Ours is a volunteer organization, and the work of the Association could never succeed without those who donate their time and expertise for our collective benefit. Please offer the Lord thanks for the generous work of these volunteers and many others:

Although this list includes a wonderful crowd of people, it likely leaves out more than it mentions. The work of each one on behalf of ACL represents a sacrifice, and we are exceedingly blessed by their generosity. Pray that the Lord will likewise bless them with energy, encouragement, and enthusiasm for the work to which they are called.

Gratefully,

Denise

Wednesday

Dear friends,

As the month of April hurries forward, the end of the academic year seems daily to loom larger on the horizon. For some, the conclusion of this school year will mark an important transition into or out of a vital chapter of their professional life. As your colleagues prepare to let go of roles and tasks they have loved or to step into something new and exciting, please lift them to the Lord.

Today, I encourage you to pray for ACL members who are undergoing challenging transitions. Some may be students or new library professionals seeking a place to serve. Some may be mid-career librarians considering a move, a new role, or added responsibilities. Others may be approaching retirement and in need of direction or provision for the days ahead. Whatever the circumstances, if you are navigating a season of uncertainty, we are praying for you today.

“O Lord, I call to you; come quickly to me. Hear my voice when I call to you. May my prayer be set before you like incense, may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice.” Psalm 141:1-2

Gratefully,

Denise

Tuesday

ACL friends,

Thank you for lifting your hearts in prayer yesterday on behalf of the many institutions represented within our organization. What a blessing to be part of the ACL community as we remember and support one another.

On this second day of our call to prayer, I hope you’ll join me in praying for those employed by the Association. We have a wonderful team keeping ACL on track day by day. They connect us with beneficial resources, answer our many questions, support the work of our teams, manage ACL’s ongoing business, execute their respective roles with incredible skill, and—most importantly—serve  the Lord with gladness. We are blessed by their work and their witness. As you pray, I hope you’ll express your gratitude even as you ask the Lord to meet their individual needs for encouragement and direction.

“We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.” I Thessalonians 1:3

Monday

Dear friends,

For the Association of Christian Librarians, National Library Week serves each year as an opportunity to unite in prayer on behalf of our colleagues and our communities. You’ll receive a message each day with a suggested focus, and I hope you’ll join with me in the great privilege of praying together throughout the week.

I’m grateful daily that I work in a library in Christian higher education. Many of you share that experience, whether at a liberal arts institution, a Bible college, or a seminary. ACL members also work at state universities, public libraries, and in a variety of other settings that are just as unique and rewarding. No matter what your institution looks like, be encouraged that your good work is an expression of your faithfulness.

As we begin our week of prayer, please pray that God will guide and provide for the many institutions represented within our Association. Pray for those tasked with leadership responsibilities within each library. Pray for each institution’s leaders—that humility and God’s wisdom will hold sway in their decisions. Pray for its finances—that the resources necessary for its work will be managed responsibly. Finally, pray for each institution’s future. In days of plenty and in days of want, our  institutions need the Lord’s direction. While you pray for the colleges, universities, and other institutions where your ACL colleagues are living out their vocation, take courage that these co-laborers in Christ are praying for you, as well.

“There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to one hope when you were called—one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” Ephesians 4:4-6

Gratefully,

Denise
