Library Public Services and Tutoring Coordinator - Westmont College - Santa Barbara, CA


The Library Public Services & Tutoring Coordinator is responsible for supporting the work of the Public Services and Instructional Services librarians. The coordinator will recruit, hire, train, and supervise the student workers who manage the circulation department and the library academic tutoring program. Professional development is supported and encouraged. Flexible hours. Public Services

  • Ensures that the library is open to patrons throughout the year by supervising and scheduling student workers staffing the Circulation Desk.
  • Supervises the operation of the circulation department, including borrowing, checking in, shelving, and maintenance of the physical collections.
  • Provides support for faculty instruction and research, including the management of Course Reserves and the distribution of faculty cubicle keys.
  • Oversees library public spaces.
  • Designs exhibits highlighting library collections.
  • Assists the Public Services Librarian with outreach to the Westmont community.
  • Assists the Interlibrary Loan Manager as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Library Tutoring 

  • In collaboration with the Instructional Services Librarian, hires, trains, schedules, and supervises student staff providing peer tutoring.
  • Sometimes schedules and facilitates weekly tutor training sessions.
  • Organizes and implements outreach aimed at students and faculty.
  • Supplements peer tutoring by monitoring requests for individual consultations and providing on-call instruction as needed.
  • Maintains records of tutoring program and drafts reports for the Library instructional services statistics; campus-wide updates; CRLA Level 1 and 2 International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC); Provost’s office assessment of library tutoring and student success initiatives.
  • Remains current on best practices in pedagogy, student support, and academic peer assistance.
  • Observes library tutors in action during study sessions and gives productive feedback.



  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • This position requires teaching and/or college peer tutoring experience, or its equivalent.
  • Strong customer service skills, with emphasis on the Christian virtue of hospitality.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills with all stakeholders - library staff, college faculty and administration, and student workers.
  • Proficiency with current online technologies and social media and an ability to adapt to new cloud-based software applications.
  • Ability to learn, apply, and troubleshoot various software applications, including Microsoft Excel, for record keeping and reports.
  • Demonstrated skill in data analysis and assessment.
  • Capacity to problem-solve and adapt to unexpected circumstances.
  • Must be able to provide supervision nights and weekends, as needed.
