Metadata Librarian - Baylor University - Waco, TX

JOB SUMMARY

The Baylor University Libraries seek to hire a full-time Metadata Librarian. The Metadata Librarian creates, maintains, and enriches the metadata for Baylor’s digital collections. They serve in a critical role for making our collections discoverable and accessible using tools such as the library services platform (Alma), discovery service (Primo), and digital asset management systems (DSpace and Quartex). They work collaboratively with the personnel in special collections and the Digitization and Digital Preservation group in support of metadata needs and best practices for digital projects, publishing, and digital collection platforms and repositories. They bring and advocate for an inclusive, anti-racist, and anti-bias lens to the work of describing and creating access points to information resources, information platforms, algorithms, and systems. This is an academic professional position with faculty status that reports to the Director for Cataloging and Metadata Services in Library Collections, Systems, and Digital Services.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides leadership, support, and training in metadata creation, maintenance and enhancement for digital collections in collaboration with others
  • Develops approaches to ensure the quality and consistency of metadata in the library’s core systems (Alma, DSpace, and Quartex) and collection-specific guidelines and documentation
  • Manipulates and transforms data in commonly used bibliographic and descriptive formats for batch loading and analysis
  • Works closely with appropriate personnel on library systems interoperability and functionality, such as OAI-PMH, metadata crosswalks, etc.
  • Works on shared projects and initiatives that contribute to the customization, enhancement, and evaluation of the library's discovery service (Primo)
  • Collaborates with other library personnel in developing workflows and guidelines for current and emerging digital formats by keeping current with trends, innovations, and best practices affecting library metadata and digital collections
  • Meets university expectations for scholarship and service, including active participation in local, regional, national, and international organizations

EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library program or a recognized equivalent program (well-qualified candidates receiving their degree by June 2022 will also be considered)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse personalities and perspectives
  • Eagerness to learn emerging and evolving technologies on a continual basis
  • Relevant practical experience with non-MARC metadata in a library environment, as well as working knowledge of the MARC standard
  • Understanding of integration and interoperability of library systems, repositories, websites, and research platforms, such as OAI-PMH
  • Familiarity with Dublin Core and XML-based standards such as EAD and PREMIS
  • Knowledge of current bibliographic standards and models such as RDA, LCSH, LCGFT, and catalog management procedures/techniques
  • Working knowledge of OCLC cataloging utilities, library services platforms (Alma preferred), and digital asset management systems
  • Strong organizational skills demonstrated by the ability to direct multiple tasks and projects
  • Strong commitment to serving constituents and the larger community

DESIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to see the big picture and implement specific, granular solutions
  • Experience with repository and digital asset management systems such as DSpace, Quartex, CONTENTdm, Digital Commons, Fedora, etc.
  • Knowledge of data manipulation tools, such as OpenRefine, PyMARC, MarcEdit, etc.
  • Experience with Python, PERL, or other scripting language
  • Knowledge of copyright, licensing, and rights management issue as they relate to library digital collections
  • Project management experience
  • Familiarity with archival practices and digitization workflow
  • Recent professional or paraprofessional experience in library technical services
