College history:
Northwestern College began as The Northwestern Bible and Missionary Training School, founded in 1902 at First Baptist Church of Minneapolis, Minnesota. As the school’s founder and first president, Dr. William Bell Riley’s goal was to ground Christian workers in God’s Word and general education while providing an alternative to the modernist theology growing in popularity at this time period. Under the leadership of William Berntsen, the college purchased the land and buildings of the Nazareth Hall Preparatory Seminary from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Saint Paul/Minneapolis in 1970. The current campus opened to classes in 1972.
Northwestern College integrates the transformational power of biblical faith, learning, and living through two focuses: higher education and media. Each of Northwestern’s fifty bachelor-degree majors includes thirty credit hours of Bible courses. There is also a growing Master’s degree program. Northwestern continues the dream of its founder, Dr. William Bell Riley, by educating and encouraging its students to be wholeheartedly Christian, academically excellent, community focused, and engaged in the world. Northwestern Media’s ministry includes 16 Christian radio stations in eight markets in Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Florida.
Construction updates:
Due to the economic downturn, the start date of construction on Northwestern’s newest building, the Billy Graham Community Life Commons, was delayed from April to September 2009. Although this means construction will be at a full tilt in June of 2010, please know that we will be working closely with our Facilities Operator to ensure the impact on Conference guests is minimal. We will be posting details on this page as Conference gets closer, so please check back for updates.
