Possible Construction Detours when Driving to Springfield

Driving to Springfield:  Due to construction at the I-44/Glenstone Avenue intersection (the most direct route to Evangel from northern directions), check driving conditions carefully before you start your trip and watch for updates from Host Librarian Woodie Moore.  Detours and travel times change frequently in this area.

*UPDATE* Directions for those arriving by private auto. There is a lot of road construction in the Springfield area this summer. SLOW DOWN IN CONSTRUCTION AREAS.

There are Evangel University signs at the proper exits on all the freeways. Just look for those signs and exit at that off ramp.

If you are arriving by auto, please use I-44 from the east or west. Take the 80 exit (Highway H) which is Glenstone Ave. If you exit from either the east or the west, you will turn right on Glenstone from the exit ramps. That will take you by the Ramada if you are staying there. It will be on your left about a block south of the interstate. To get to Evangel, continue south 2 miles on Glenstone and you will see the large Evangel sign on the right (west) side of the road. Enter the campus at that sign and you will see ACL signs directing you to turn south on the campus. Follow the signs to Walther Hall parking lot.

If you are coming from Kansas City, you will be on Missouri 13 and you need to turn east onto I-44 and follow those directions above. If you are coming from the south on US 65, exit at Division Street and turn left on Division. Follow it west to Glenstone (major intersection) and turn left. The campus is on the right.

A WORD OF CAUTION about Glenstone. The signals are set up to move traffic in batches. When one of those batches is going by, please be patient. If you wait about two minutes, there is almost always a break in both directions. Be especially cautious in the area north of Kearney Street (by Wal-Mart) up to the Interstate. Because of the construction there will be backups at rush hour. If you need to go south and cannot get a break, turn left, then just turn right and go to the light and turn right. Turn around in a parking lot and come back out and turn left onto Glenstone at the light. When you exit Evangel, if traffic is heavy, you can go north on campus, exit onto Division and then turn left at the light on Glenstone.

If you have problems call 417-865-2815, Ext. 7268 to get the library. After hours call me at 417-894-4559.

  Conference Transportation From Springfield Airport
Back to Top

This only applies to those flying into Springfield and not renting a car for conference.

Call Dale Turner (or his assistant) at Springfield Limo the day before you fly out and give him your name, carrier, flight number, estimated time of arrival, and cell number. He will arrange for a limo to pick you up at the front door. The cost for one to four persons will be $20.00 to Evangel campus. Tell him you are attending the ACL conference. The limos are well marked and should be easy to spot. They are black and look like the one President Obama uses.

His office number is 417-831-2096 and his cell is 417-894-1071.

You might want to print this and put it with your tickets.

  From The Airport

A few have inquired about this.

The driving distance from the Springfield airport to Evangel is listed as 6.8 miles on map quest.  I think it is closer to 8 miles, but I've never clocked it.  The new airport adds about a mile to that.  It opens May 6.  The time to drive it is about 20 minutes with most of it being on an expressway.  The cost for a taxi is about $15-20 each trip.  However, that cost includes up to four.  If possible, you might post your arrival time on the reflector and "buddy-up" to cut the cost.

As most of you know, insurance regulations make it almost impossible to run shuttle services now for non-students and staff.

Also, if you stay at the Ramada-Oasis, there is a free shuttle.

I am happy to try to answer any questions about conference.  We want you to have the best possible experience this year.

For those of you flying to airports other than Springfield, when we get closer I’ll send info on routes to use.  There has been so much construction in the St. Louis area and on I-44 the last four years that some of the roads may still be slow or closed.  I'll ask my son about a week before the conference to see if there are any delays around the usual route from St. Louis.  Two years ago, it was faster to travel on a two lane road back to Springfield because of construction on I-270 and I-44.  But, it is more than 80% complete now and I’ve not heard of any slowdowns this spring.  Drive time from St. L to campus is about 4 hours.

The road to KC is now finished, except for some new construction near Springfield.  That should not slow anyone down because a new southbound lane is being built some distance from the existing road.  That driving time (depending on time of day) is about 3 ½ hours.

I went to Tulsa in late December and there were no delays on I-44.  That driving time is about 3 hours.

The road to Branson is a new four lane all the way.  That driving time is about one hour.

I'll check with MO Dept of Transportation about a week before conference.

Travel and Airport Update Back to Top

If you are flying to the ACL conference in Springfield from the Minneapolis-St. Paul area or can get a good connection to there, you might consider this alternative (below, in Press Release) for $79 each way. It is limited to a M-W-Sat schedule. Any savings would have to be weighed against adding a night or two in a motel and meals. For those coming early or staying late, it might work very well. Evangel or the Ramada Oasis Hotel in Springfield is about one hour's drive from this new airport. The arrival and departure times are excellent for someone arriving Monday and leaving Saturday.

As of this time, I'm not aware of any limo or shuttle service to Springfield, but you might be able to arrange a pickup with someone who is at the conference or rent a car. I am checking on shuttle services regularly.

If you are choosing between St. Louis and Kansas City for your arrival, the drive from KC is on an excellent, lightly used, scenic, four lane highway. I would estimate the travel time to be about 3 hours and 30 minutes to KC and about 4 hours to St. Louis airports. The road to St. Louis is I-44, one of the busiest in the state and I find it rather nerve racking sometimes. The road to Tulsa is also I-44, but not as congested as the Springfield to St. Louis leg. Commute time from Tulsa is about 3 hours, if you choose that airport.

If I can help you in any way with your arrangements, please contact me by email at moorew@evangel.edu.

For those traveling by auto, I’ll post directions on the conference website as we get closer to conference. Basically, you come I-44 from the east and west, US 65 from the north and south, and State Route 13 from the northwest (KC.)

If you are driving from St. Louis to the conference, Old Route 66 runs parallel to a good portion of I-44. In addition, I highly recommend a little barbecue place called Missouri Hick Barbecue located just off I-44 in Cuba. This restaurant now has a permanent spot on our travel plans when our family drives across Missouri.

Transportation to Springfield:

The Springfield Airport will open a new terminal building in April of 2009.  In addition, Tulsa, St. Louis, and Kansas City are about a three hour drive from Springfield for those wishing to fly.  Those flying into Springfield and staying at the conference hotel several blocks from campus will have free shuttle service to the hotel. Those staying on campus can use taxi service from the airport for about $20.  Springfield has four-lane expressways that connect it to most major cities.

The New Branson Airport Back to Top

As some may know, there is a brand new airport scheduled to open in Branson in May, 2009. AirTran is the only carrier now scheduled into Branson; connecting from Atlanta. I did a couple of hypothetical reservations from various other airports and found some great fares. See: flybranson.com I don't know how long these fares will last and while I've not heard any rumors, it is possible that the airport might have to delay the opening. At this point I wanted to alert those of you that might have AirTran service to take a look at fares and schedules. I don't know if there will be any limo or bus service from that airport to Springfield, but if you planned to rent a car anyway, that would be an option. You can drive from the new airport to Evangel in about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes. I will start monitoring this and put more information on this conference website when it is posted.

  Some Branson info

This item is a bit dated (April, 2008) but I wanted to wait until closer to the 2009 ACL conference to get it out. It tells the story of the evolution of Branson from the mid-1970’s to the present. You might enjoy reading it. stltoday.com/stltoday/lifestyle/...
