  FAQ

1. What is the appropriate attire for Conference?

Attendees at ACL conferences are guests on the host institution's campus and are expected to honor the social norms of the campus and sponsoring churches. Evangel University prohibits the use of tobacco products, alcohol, and illegal substances. The dress code for Evangel is modesty for both men and women. It is the custom that the ACL banquet is considered a dressier affair. In keeping with current styles, the dress for this year's banquet is "business casual" or "smart casual" and may or may not include a tie and jacket for men or formal dress for women.

2. Are there telephones in the residence halls?

The rooms in the residence halls have phone jacks, but phones are not included; you may bring your own if you wish. There are phones in all the residence hall lobbies and elsewhere around campus including the student union. Most phones have chairs available beside them. You can dial 9-1-800-xxx-xxxx to use a phone card.

3. Will we be able to watch television in the Residence Halls?

The Residence Halls have televisions in the lobbies. There are free cable TV connections in each dorm room. You are welcome to bring your own TV.

4. Are there any Conference 2.0 features?

Yes, there is a Conference Facebook site, for people who are on Facebook (and joining is quick and simple).
Log in and look for "ACL Springfield-Evangel 2009."

Also, ACL Members may log in to the ACL Conference Wiki at https://www.acl.org/wiki/index.cfm and post questions and comments about the upcoming Conference!

5. Where might I go walking, hiking, biking, or canoeing?

Woodie's assistant has prepared a list of local trails. All are within a short 10 to 30 minutes drive from Evangel. All are well maintained and considered safe for walking anytime during the day, however, it is always advisable to walk in groups of two or more in remote locations.

Woodie says:

I like to check the weather before I head to conference. I like to know in advance so I know how to pack.

Welcome to the perfect storm (pun intended) when it comes to Springfield weather. June is one of the most unpredictable months, but add to that Springfield's variations and you have to be ready for anything. When we hosted the conference in 1985, it took me about a year of haggling, pleading, begging, and whatever to get some of the meeting rooms air conditioned. Guess what? I spent most of the week going around town borrowing blankets. It was one of the coldest June weeks on record. It is the only time Evangel has ever fired the boilers in June. But, the weather in 2004 was great.

This website shows the most variable weather in the USA. The number one place—Springfield, MO.    weatherpages.com/variety/most.html

Here is an excerpt from the local paper: Weirdest Weather In The USA.

Here's what I can do. I'll send out a weather outlook about June 5th giving the best guess for the coming 7 days.

If we happen to be average, look for daytime highs in the mid-80s and evening lows in the mid-60s. The humidity and rainfall is very unpredictable, but usually it is somewhat dry 3 out of 4 days that time of the year.

We have learned that if you plan outdoor activities, to have a backup. We have a couple of outdoor activities, but we will move them inside if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

My advice is to bring a light jacket that will shed rain and some cool daytime wear. But, you may wish to toss in a long sleeve shirt or blouse and some warm pants or skirts if you don’t know what to expect.
