Evangel University of the Assemblies of God is the national university of arts and sciences of the Assemblies of God. Evangel is regionally accredited, and offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees. It is located in Springfield, Missouri, the U.S. headquarters city of the Assemblies of God. Springfield is a medium-sized city with ample employment opportunities and strong community values. Located in the heart of Ozark Mountain Country, Springfield is surrounded by scenic lakes and mountains, shopping, restaurants, and hotels..

Evangel was founded by the General Council of the Assemblies of God, meeting in Milwaukee Aug. 26-Sep. 1, 1953. Historians recognize the Rev. Ralph M. Riggs, General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God 1953-59, as the individual who spearheaded the movement to establish Evangel University. Evangel was incorporated by the State of Missouri on Aug. 11, 1955, and was renamed Evangel University in 1998. It is situated on the site of the former O'Reilly General Hospital, Springfield, MO.

The Kaude Kendrick Library, dedicated in 1963, is named in honor of Evangel University's first president Dr. Klaude Kendrick, who served from 1955-1958.

Two organizations of A/G laymen and lay women, the Council of Evangel College and the Ladies Auxiliary, had taken responsibility for fund raising for the library. In recognition, a special Ribbon Cutting ceremony was held on October 10, 1962, during their annual meetings.

The Library's north wing served as the University chapel auditorium from Spring, 1963 through Spring, 1966. Chapel services were then moved into a larger (but still temporary) building, and the vacated north wing of the Library became the Reference Room. It is named the Carl I. Erickson Reference Room in memory of a deceased reference librarian.
